The No. 8 BYU Cougars held off the Arizona State Sun Devils on Saturday for a 27-20 win, but the winning score came courtesy of what the conference later admitted was an incorrect call by its replay officials.

With the score 0-0, BYU had the ball on 2nd-and-goal in the first quarter when quarterback Bear Bachmeier fumbled on a sneak attempt. Running back Sione Moa eventually picked it up and rolled into the end zone. Field officials initially ruled that Bachmeier's forward progress had stopped, ending the play. However, the Big 12's replay review officials reviewed the play and overturned the call, crediting BYU with a touchdown.

At the time, the decision stymied the Fox announcing booth, including rules analyst Mike Pereira, who has clearly gotten sick of calling out bad Big 12 official decisions .

"This is not the type of situation that you have when a runner steps out of bounds where you can continue in action," Pereira said on the broadcast. "This was a player that recovered the ball and got up in the field of play. The ruling on the field was the runner was down initially. And if that's the case, you've ruled it dead. You can give a recovery, but you can't give an advance, unless you've come up with a new rule here, which I'm not too sure you can really do."

"This is getting kind of frustrating, you know, week to week," he continued. "You know, we shouldn't have these situations that we come up, and then we have further explanation as the week wears on… They killed the play. You can forget about when the whistle happened. They killed the play in the field of play, and the ball was out. Give the recovery, but not the advance."

After the game, the Big 12 issued a statement admitting that the replay officials made an "incorrect" call and that a touchdown should not have been awarded.

At 11:27 in the first period of the Arizona State-BYU game, Big 12 Replay Officials stopped the game to review possession by BYU. The play showed that the runner lost possession of the ball prior to the forward progress spot, and the ball was recovered by another BYU player at the two-yard line and he was awarded a touchdown.

Rule 12-3-3-d-2 states, "If the replay official rules that the ball was not dead, it belongs to the recovering team at the spot of the recovery and any advance is nullified."

Replay was incorrect in awarding a score. The correct ruling should have been BYU ball for a third and goal attempt from the two-yard line.

This is now the third straight week Big 12 officials have made an objectively incorrect call that affected the outcome of a game.

Two weeks ago, Big 12 officials seemingly missed a pass interference call and failed to account for an extra second at the end of the BYU-Notre Dame game, leading to the Cougars' win. Afterward, Pereira said the ending was " embarrassing for all officiating ."

Last week, in UCF's 39–31 double-overtime upset over BYU, Big 12 officials misapplied the 10-second runoff rule at the end of regulation, enforcing a runoff after a helmet came off on a blocked field goal that was a legal kick down. Rules analysts such as Terry McAulay explained that the runoff shouldn't have been applied . Later, officials also called a very disputed roughing-the-kicker penalty against the Cougars.

The good news for BYU, apparently, is that all of these bad calls have worked out well for them. Though that doesn't bode well for whatever karmic retribution clearly awaits them down the road.
