A Virginia man faces charges in connection with his infant son's death after reportedly confessing during a phone conversation that he shook his child while yelling at him because he "just wanted him to be quiet." The Hopewell Police Department announced that 22 year old Nathan Travis-Nunnally was charged with felony homicide, child abuse, and aggravated malicious wounding.

During his preliminary hearing on Thursday, October 15, prosecutors presented a cellphone recording in which Travis-Nunnally acknowledged shaking his child, according to CBS affiliate WTVR.

The incident unfolded on June 14 when police responded to a call around 10:40 a. m. regarding an unresponsive child on the 4900 block of Oaklawn Boulevard in Hopewell, approximately 20 miles south of Richmond.

Both the Hopewell Police Department and Hopewell Fire Department responded to the scene. When emergency personnel arrived at the home, they found an unresponsive five-month-old boy and immediately began treatment.

After first responders provided care, they transported him to the hospital "for a life-threatening injury." According to WTVR, the infant, identified as Skottie, was first brought to TriCities Hospital before being airlifted to Chippenham Hospital.

He was ultimately placed in the ICU at the Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU (CHoR), but tragically passed away just five days after emergency services found him.

Authorities said the injuries were consistent with shaken baby syndrome. Travis-Nunnally was taken into custody in connection with baby Skottie's death and held at the Riverside Regional Jail.

During the recorded call played in court on Thursday, the defendant could be heard telling the child's uncle, "I just wanted him to be quiet,".

"I started screaming at him. I picked him up, and then I shook him," he was heard saying.

Authorities also alleged that Travis-Nunnally went on to say that he "told him to shut the f- up" because the boy was agitated, before describing how his son suddenly went limp, at which point he called 911.

At the time of the alleged incident, the child's mother was serving a weekend jail sentence, according to WTVR. She told the outlet that although she had previously been engaged to Travis-Nunnally, the two had since separated.

"I mean, Skottie was my heart, my soul, everything to me," the mother, Sarina Aldrich, told WTVR. "Seeing it all at once and just reliving it in that moment is hard. It's hard for all of us, all the family."

The case and its associated charges are set to be reviewed by a grand jury in December.
