UCF hopes to go stratospheric in Friday's Space Game against a struggling Baylor, which will make its debut under new interim head coach Joe Klanderman. Defensive coordinator Klanderman is stepping in for the fired Dave Aranda, whose seven-year spell in charge came to an end following consecutive defeats to TCU and Kansas.
The Knights were not long ago locked in their own slide of double defeats after coming up short against ranked Big 12 rivals Houston and Oklahoma State. That's all in the past after surprising BYU – who dropped from No. 2 to No. 8 in the rankings – in double overtime last Saturday, coming up with a 39-31 victory to send a message to the rest of the conference that there's still fight in them yet.
Both of these teams sit locked on identical records so far this season, going 2-2 in the Big 12 and 4-3 overall in what's been a middling campaign for each program. Klanderman hopes to change that in his first game as a college head coach but will have to end UCF's undefeated record at the Acrisure Bounce House to do so.
Knights quarterback Keyone Jenkins had just four touchdown passes across the first five games of the year but has exploded into form with seven scoring throws in the last two games alone. Bears counterpart DJ Lagway has seen form fall in the opposite direction of late and has twice as many interceptions (two) as he does touchdown throws over Baylor's last two outings.
