5 Fall Date Night Outfits Guaranteed to Make A Great First Impression

Save this story Save Story Save this story After months of heat and sweat, there’s finally a chill in the air. Yes, the season that brought you pumpkin spice, NFL football, and Thanksgiving dinners also brings you the chance to get some of your best fits of the year off. It’s a great time to leave the house, and go full When Harry Met Sally -mode on ‘em .

The crisp weather and changing leaves also make it the perfect moment for some cozy date nights. Whether you’re newly seeing someone special or fully locked down with your squeeze, a night out with them deserves a little more effort. Sure, Justin Bieber never quite matches the elegance of his wife, but that’s no excuse to wear track pants.

Instead, our best advice is just to dress for the plan, and keep things understated. Don’t force a fit for the sake of it; they’ll know you’re doing too much. Your outfit might make a great first impression, but after that, let your winning personality take over. Charm them with wit and effervescence. Looking good is just the gravy. With that in mind, we’ve put together five fall date fits for whatever’s on your calendar, with a few pointers on how to dial each one in. Good luck out there, stud.

As the daytime date is the most casual of hangs, the fit should match that energy: These dates are often just a quick compatibility check. It’s true rom-com hours. You’re walking, you’re talking, you’re cracking wise, and your date is eating it up all while you look particularly put-together.

For this, you want utility, but also to make an impression: a seasonally appropriate plaid flannel, some light-wash jeans, a killer jacket. And hey, it’s fall, so get some proper lace-up boots on the dogs and even a beanie if it’s cold enough. If the fit lands and you keep your booted foot out of your mouth, coffee could turn into cocktails.

You’ve been out a couple of times—now we're upping the ante and taking in a little culture. It's time to dress it up a tad. With seasonality in mind, plan for wind, rain or cooler temps. Layering up will obviously keep you warm, but also allow you to comfortably lose a few when you get indoors. A classic mac coat will keep you dry, and a mid-layer blouson or sweater will keep you still looking cool whilst viewing the Van Goghs.

You’ve closed all your work tabs, now it’s time to open a bar tab. For a drink date after work, you’ll want something that’s appropriate under the harsh fluorescents hanging over your desk, and that can also carry you through the chilly walk over after dark, and handle wherever you end up squishing into in the packed bar.

A knit is an easy, warm place to start. A V-neck lets the white tee underneath peek through, and an attractive bright colour isn't a bad idea if the rest of the fit is toned down. Top it with a casual blazer or chore jacket, depending on your workplace, then finish with chinos and sharp shoes.

Dinner is always a good idea. Fire up Resy, book a table for two at the hot new spot, and dress it up. In fall, you’re dressing for both the chilly walk over and the warm dining room, so a good layer earns its keep.

Unless you’re headed to a private club or a three-Michelin-starred restaurant, you probably don’t need a full jacket, shirt and tie. But a well-tailored jacket over a knit still makes the night feel like an occasion—which it is! Either way, you’ll be comfortable and a notch sharper than usual. And remember to top it off with a good-looking timepiece and a distinctive scent: Comme des Garçons’ Blackpepper hits a seductively spicy note, and you’ll leave a lasting impression. Picking up the check won't hurt, either.

Sometimes a cozy night in is exactly what the date doctor ordered. Having someone over lets them see a bit of your world: your choice in decor, your books, your cooking skills (or charming lack thereof). But while it is your abode, and you want to feel natural and comfortable, you still should look your best.

The pajama bottoms can stay in the drawer; relaxed chinos or pull-on trousers will do nicely. Try an ultra-soft knit over a T-shirt. It’s a little more put-together than a sweatshirt or hoodie, and nicer for them to watch a movie next to. Then, add socks with a bit of personality—a pop of colour, or a subtle pattern. (Socks that are fun, to be clear, not “fun socks.”) And please: Don't even think about a robe.
