Terry McLaurin's return to action was more short-lived than the Washington Commanders might have hoped.

The seventh-year wideout – and Washington's No. 1 wide receiver when healthy – initially missed four games with a quad injury he sustained in a Week 3 clash with the Las Vegas Raiders. In Week 8, McLaurin returned in time for the Commanders' "Monday Night Football" face-off with the Kansas City Chiefs and scored his first touchdown of the season.

But before the Oct. 27 game was over, McLaurin was back on the sideline getting his quad examined by trainers. Days before he and the Commanders were set to take the field on Nov. 2 for Week 9's "Sunday Night Football," Washington had already ruled out its top receiver.

Commanders head coach Dan Quinn told reporters on Oct. 29 that McLaurin re-injured his quad in last week's game against the Chiefs. For the time being, Quinn said it's "too early to predict" how much more time the wideout could miss.

Here's everything we know so far about McLaurin's injury status ahead of Week 9:

5. Buffalo Bills acquire Kelvin Benjamin from Carolina Panthers (2017) The 2014 first-round pick never quite lived up to the potential he showed in his rookie season with the Carolina Panthers. After catching 73 passes for 1,008 yards and nine touchdowns his first season, Benjamin missed the entire 2015 season after tearing his ACL in training camp.

3. Indianapolis Colts send first-round pick to Browns for Trent Richardson (2013) Trent Richardson tallied 950 yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground, 367 receiving yards, and one touchdown catch as a rookie in 2012. At the time, he seemed the lone bright spot in an otherwise brutal year for the Cleveland Browns. First-round quarterback and 28-year-old rookie Brandon Weeden had the fourth-worst passer rating in the NFL. Cleveland finished 5-11 and in last place in the AFC North.

1 / 23Did one of these NFL trade deadline deals ruin your fantasy league team for the year? The NFL trade deadline is quickly approaching. Some teams could make trades that boost their playoff and Super Bowl odds, but others will make bad deals that hamper their rosters. There's no way to know which trades will turn out the best until one is able to look back with the benefit of hindsight. However, several deals from the past have not aged so well in the years since they happened. More than a few bad moves happened midseason at the trade deadline. The following five trades have aged exceptionally poorly and could be considered among the worst trade deadline deals in NFL history.

Terry McLaurin injury update

The Commanders have ruled McLaurin out for Week 9, the team's head coach told reporters on Oct. 29.

The seventh-year receiver re-injured his quad during Washington's "Monday Night Football" loss to the Chiefs, and he'll miss a "Sunday Night Football" meeting with the Seattle Seahawks on Nov. 2.

Quinn also shared with reporters that he and the Commanders believe that McLaurin's injury won't knock him out for a long time, but it's still "too early to predict" whether he'll miss more than just Week 9's game.

NFL WEEK 9: Picks, predictions and odds for every game

Terry McLaurin stats

McLaurin has already missed four games this season with a quad injury – matching the total number of games he had missed in his whole career before this year – and now will miss a fifth. It all but guarantees the seventh-year wideout will have his 1,000-yard season streak broken after five straight years of excellent production amid quarterback turmoil in Washington.

Here's how McLaurin's stats look entering Week 9:

Targets: 21

Receptions: 13

Yards: 203

Touchdowns: 1

Commanders WR depth chart

Washington currently has four healthy receivers on its active roster.

Terry McLaurin (out – quad)

Deebo Samuel

Luke McCaffrey

Chris Moore

Jaylin Lane

Noah Brown (IR – groin/knee)

Samuel (trade) and Lane (2025 fourth-round pick) are two newcomers to the Commanders' roster this year. Samuel has taken over the No. 1 receiver role for Washington in McLaurin's injury-related absences, while Lane has mostly contributed as a punt returner this season.

McCaffrey, the younger brother of San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey, is in his second season after the Commanders drafted him in the third round last year. In 2025, McCaffrey has taken on a bigger role in the offense while continuing his kick returning duties.

In addition to the four healthy receivers on its active roster, Washington has three veterans and two rookies on its practice squad: Robbie Chosen, Treylon Burks and Lawrence Cager are the vets; Ja'Corey Brooks and Jacoby Jones are the rookies.
