Born in Southampton, Hill – whose real name was Alfred Hawthorne Hill – became a legendary funnyman of British TV in the 1950s and 1960s. The creation of The Benny Hill Show, which ran from 1955 to 1989, catapulted him to global fame with its use of slapstick sketch comedy and frequent innuendo.
